IDAHOBIT DAY - Friday 15 May

On Friday 15 May, our school recognised IDAHOBIT Day and celebrated acceptance, diversity and inclusion. We hosted a special morning on Friday, with students and families engaging in a variety of arts and crafts activities before assembly including bracelet making, and rainbow colouring in. It was wonderful to see our students, staff and parent community dressing up in rainbow colours for the day to celebrate diversity and inclusion. We had a special performance from Oli Talbot-Dunn, Eve Le Page, Elijah Brown and Mrs Petrie singing and performing ‘Scar’ and ‘True Colours’, which was truly breathtaking. We had class showcases from 3/4H, Prep and 5/6T as well as a PE Specialist update.

Throughout last week, every student and staff member has been working on a self-portrait to feature in our school art installation titled ‘Rainbow of Respect and Love’. Students chose one colour to feature in their self-portrait and this will combine to form a rainbow with self-portraits made by all students and staff in the school - highlighting how we are all different and unique. IDAHOBIT Day was a special day for our school community, celebrating kindness, respect and belonging.

Semester 1 Reports and Industrial Action

Due to ongoing AEU Industrial Action, Semester 1 student reports will not include individual teacher comments. As part of the current action, the Australian Education Union (AEU) has put a ban on all aspects of work related to the provision of written comments on student reports that will be provided to parents.

Semester Reports are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the successes and achievements of students throughout Term 1 and Term 2, and identify next steps in your child’s learning journey. Semester 1 Reports will include Progression Scale (Five-Point Scale of Achievement A to E), identify growth points and outline your child’s achievement against the Victorian Curriculum within subject areas.

Our focus remains on ensuring families receive meaningful information about your child’s learning, and teachers will be available to discuss your child’s progress at the Term 3 Parent Teacher Interviews held on Tuesday 21 July and Wednesday 22 July.

We appreciate your understanding and support during this period, and understand that the AEU Industrial Action impacts our school’s Semester Report framework.

Reconciliation Week

Reconciliation Week will begin in Week 7 of Term 2. This is a national week of exploring how we can further reconciliation with First Nations Peoples in Australia, bookended by two significant dates - the 1967 Referendum which included Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as part of the population under the Commonwealth, and the Mabo decision, which resulted in the Native Title Act. This year’s national theme, “All In,” invites every individual to play an active role in strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and non‑Indigenous Australians. All In reminds us that reconciliation is not the work of a few - it is a shared commitment where every voice, action and choice contributes to a more just and connected future.

To celebrate this important week, parents and carers are warmly invited to our “All In for Reconciliation” Family Afternoon on Tuesday 2 June from 2–3pm. Families will join students in a range of learning and art activities designed to deepen understanding, spark conversation and honour the histories and cultures of First Nations peoples. Throughout the week, students will engage in a variety of activities and learning about First Nations People, culture and history.

We look forward to coming together as a community — all in, and all committed — to learning, reflecting and taking meaningful steps toward reconciliation. We hope our families can join us for this special occasion.

In addition to this, Reconciliation Queenscliffe (local community group) has partnered with Shedding the Blues to Sing Out for Reconciliation, with Midnight Oil's 'Beds Are Burning' the song for 2026. This will occur on Friday 29 May 2026 from 5pm at the Queenscliffe Hub (which also bears an Aboriginal name - Wirrng Wirrng - meaning to listen with both ears in Wadawurrung). On Saturday 30 May, Reconciliation Queenscliffe will be hosting a range of activities for reconciliation at the Point Lonsdale Primary School from 2-4pm.

Cross Country Division

On Tuesday 19 May, we had 15 students compete in the Division Cross Country event held at the Geelong Racecourse. Congratulations to the following students who represented our school with determination and pride.

Charlie Berry Evelyn Pettigrove
Elsie Blythe Marcel Sayegh
Miles Garland Jude Spencer
Xavier Grainger Amelie Stanley
George Kent Eleanor Vosbergen
Alice Kinsman Georgia Ward
Eve Le Page Edie Wilkinson

Congratulations to Xavier Grainger finishing 2nd in his age group, qualifying for the next round.

Nherrin Boor Woork Strides and Stories Challenge

The ‘Nherrin Boor Woork Strides and Stories’ Challenge commenced this week. ‘Nherrin Boor Woork’ is Wadawurrung language for ‘Queenscliff’. The challenge involves students selecting to either undertake a reading challenge or exercise challenge (involving running, walking, riding or scootering). This week, students were provided with a handbook for the challenge whereby they can record their exercise or reading, and sponsorship. Students are to bring in their ‘Nherrin Boor Woork Strides and Stories’ handbooks every Friday so that teachers can celebrate their progress and achievements. All sponsorship from the challenge will fundraise for our school to purchase a bronze bird bath to feature at the front of our school. The SRC have discussed in meetings how they wish to bring more birdlife to our school grounds and provide a more welcoming space at our school entrance. The bird bath will look similar to the photograph below.

Lightning Premiership Soccer

Congratulations to our Year 5/6 students who represented our school at the recent Soccer Lightning Premiership competition held on Friday 8 May at Shell Road Reserve in Ocean Grove. Our students competed against students from other schools located on the Bellarine. Despite the cold and brisk weather, our students demonstrated tenacity, determination, sportsmanship and pride throughout the day, competing in all games with enthusiasm and effort. Our girls team finished in third place, whilst our boys team remained undefeated throughout the day finishing in first place. Our boys team has qualified for Division Soccer held on Wednesday 10 June (Week 8) at Myers Reserve in Bell Post Hill. Thank you to Mr Leigh Churchill, Mrs Bec Durran and Mrs

Ebony Tannouri for helping our students prepare for the event by hosting lunchtime training sessions.

Congratulations to both our Year 5/6 Lightning Premiership teams.

Term 2 Class Reps Catch Up and Class Fundraising

The Term 2 Class Reps Catch‑Up has been scheduled for Friday 22 May. Parents and carers are encouraged to connect with their child’s Class Representative prior to the meeting if there is anything you would like raised or discussed on behalf of your class community.

Queenscliff Literary Festival

Over the past two weeks, our students from Prep to Year 6 have participated in Author Workshops as part of the Queenscliff Literary Festival. Students had the opportunity to meet and learn from Dr. Mark Cathew, Claire Saxby and Emily Zoey Baker. Classrooms have buzzed with creativity as students explored the writing process, and discovered how ideas grow into stories and poetry.

Winter Uniform

As the cooler weather settles in, we’re pleased to share that Noone Uniforms now has a range of winter uniform options available for QPS students, including warmer layers to help keep everyone comfortable throughout the day. We encourage families to visit the Noone store or website to explore the updated range.

As we move into the season of jumpers, jackets and extra layers, we kindly remind parents and carers to clearly label every uniform item with your child’s name. This small step makes a big difference in helping us return misplaced items quickly and reducing the amount of lost property across the school.

Melbourne Museum and Imax Excursion

Year 1 & 2

On Monday, Year 1/2 students travelled to the Melbourne Museum and IMAX to learn more about our Integrated unit on minibeasts. We watched an amazing 3D film about Mighty Minibeasts and the superpowers they have. We also visited many exhibitions in the museum, seeing a variety of insects and historical artefacts from Australia's past. We had an amazing time! A big thank you to all staff and volunteers for organising the excursion and making it such a great day.

5/6C News

On Monday 27 April, 5/6s went to Camp Adekate. We arrived sometime near lunch and got sorted into our groups (Potter, Pink and Pugs) after that we were off to our first activities. The activities were archery, orienteering, zipline, leap of faith, initiatives, giant slingshot, hut building and milk crate stacking. After our first activity we had afternoon tea which was white choc + raspberry muffins then we went to our second activity. After that we had some free time. Later that night (after a chicken schnitzel dinner) we had a trivia night, the Jolly Jokers cooked and won, in second place was the Cats, and in third place was the Slay Cats. We all had so much fun.

On the second day we had toast and cereal for breakfast. Then we went to our first activity of the day. After lots of fun we came back for lunch, which was burgers, then went to our next activity. After that we had more free time and then it was time for dinner, which was spaghetti bolognese. Then we had a yummy dessert: chocolate cake with chocolate sauce and ice cream. We then went for a night walk and even saw a possum. After that we had a big campfire and roasted marshmallows. Some people even sang solos. Then we went to bed ready for our final day of fun.

The next day we got all packed up and headed off for our very last activity of camp, which was making a campfire and cooking damper on it. After that we had our final merits and demerits. The winning group was Pink, with Potter coming in second position and the Pugs in third. We then hopped on to the bus and left camp. We were sad to leave, but we had loads of fun while we were there. We enjoyed it very much; our favourite activity was the zipline.

SCIENCE REPORT

Science in Term 2 is all about BIOLOGY. It’s my favourite science where we dive into the wonderful world of plants and animals. Many of our classes have enjoyed helping to prepare the garden beds and plant new seedlings in the veggie garden for the Winter season. Alongside our wonderful ‘Gardening Grannies’, students attending Garden Club on Wednesday lunchtimes have been carefully tending to the plants and enjoying watching them grow.

Year Prep-2, have all been learning about living things and their environment. They have labelled features on an animal scientific diagram and used magnifying glasses to inspect the roots, stem, leaves and flowers of different plants growing at school. These classes look forward to a visit from Wildlife Xposure in two weeks time where they will get to meet a number of creatures and observe their similarities and differences first hand.

Year 3/4 and 5/6 students have started their STEM Design project for Zoos Victoria. They have chosen either the Alpine Dingo, Short beaked Echidna, Little Penguin or African Lion to research and will begin planning and creating prototypes of enrichment designs in the coming weeks. As they focus on following steps of the design process, I look forward to seeing the creativity and ingenuity the students will showcase.

Performing Arts

It has been a busy and creative few weeks in Performing Arts!

Our Prep-2 students have been exploring rhythm and beat through movement, games, singing, and body percussion. Students have been learning and performing songs together while also beginning to use key signs and actions alongside music to support communication and participation.

They have enjoyed creating rhythm patterns using claps, stomps, taps, and clicks, and our Year 1/2 students have also begun learning to read stick notation, using symbols to represent different rhythms and beats. Some students have extended beyond stick notation and begun exploring simple rhythmic notation in 4/4 time, including using quarter notes (crotchets) for one beat and eighth notes (quavers) for two sounds within a beat. It has been wonderful to see students confidently creating their own patterns and presenting them to the class by tapping and performing the rhythms they wrote themselves.

Our Prep-2 students have been exploring rhythm and beat through movement!

In Years 3-6, students have been exploring a range of digital music-making tools including Chrome Music Lab, GarageBand and MusiQuest. Most recently, students have begun composing their own music loops using GarageBand, experimenting with layers, instruments, rhythm, and structure to create original pieces of music. In the coming weeks, students will continue exploring the elements of music, learn to play simple melodies by reading basic music notation and rhythms, and begin composing and developing original pieces for their GRASP music projects.

Here are a couple of samples of the music students’ are composing.
